BPMN: An introduction to the standard
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), formerly known as Business Process Modeling Notation, is the de-facto standard for representing in a very expressive graphical way the processes occurring in virtually every kind of organization one can think of, from cuisine recipes to the Nobel Prize assignment process, severe incident management, e-mail voting systems, travel booking procedures, to name few. In this work, we give an (rather condensed) overview of the BPMN standard, as devised by OMG and we present what are the links with other well-known machineries such as BPEL and XPDL. We also give an assessment of how the OMG's BPMN standard which is rather large and complex is perceived and used by practitioners in everyday business process modeling chores. Introduction to BPMN
This paper is intended to provide a high-level overview and introduction to the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). The context and general uses for BPMN will be provided as a supplement to the technical details defined the BPMN 1.0 Specification, which has been recently completed and released to the public. The basics of the BPMN notation will be discribed—that is, the types of graphica...
متن کاملBPMN 2.0 Serialization - Standard Compliance Issues and Evaluation of Modeling Tools
Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) 2.0 process models are used more and more, both in practice as in academia. Although academic research mainly focuses on sophisticated semantic checks and extensions there still exist problems in the basic usage of BPMN. This paper investigates issues in BPMN model serializations which arise as a result of the complexity and inconsistency of the standa...
متن کاملFormal Semantics and Automated Analysis of BPMN Process Models
The Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) is a standard for capturing business processes in the early phases of systems development. The mix of constructs found in BPMN makes it possible to obtain models with a range of semantic errors. The ability to statically check the semantic correctness of models is thus a desirable feature for modelling tools based on BPMN. However, the static analy...
متن کاملAn Empirical Comparison of the Usability of BPMN and UML Activity Diagrams for Business Users
The widespread implementation of Business Process Management (BPM) strategies has increased the demand for an integral approach to business process modeling, in which all stakeholders can effectively participate and together shape a company’s business processes. Amongst others, this demand was a basis for the development of the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) as a proposed industry st...
متن کاملDo Process Modelling Techniques Get Better? A Comparative Ontological Analysis of BPMN
Current initiatives in the field of Business Process Management (BPM) strive for the development of a BPM standard notation by pushing the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). However, such a proposed standard notation needs to be carefully examined. Ontological analysis is an established theoretical approach to evaluating modelling techniques. This paper reports on the outcomes of an ont...
